Update: Healthy Savings dental discounts availability

May 3, 2012

Recently, MJM’s Co-op Connections card program began offering new Healthy Savings discounts on a variety of health-related services. MJM and other electric cooperatives throughout Illinois were under the impression that the dental service portion of the program was available at the same time that the other discounts became available in January.  However, we have just been informed today the dental discounts are not yet available in Illinois. HumanaDental, which administers the dental discounts, is in the process of setting up its registration in the state. We regret any confusion this may have caused. We have been told the issue should be resolved soon, and we will post an announcement as soon we hear the dental discounts have become available.

All the other Healthy Savings discount benefits including chiropractic, hearing, vision, lab/X-ray and prescription services, are already available, ready to use. To print out a Healthy Savings card and search for participating health care providers, click here To order a replacement Co-op Connections card (which is used in conjunction with the Healthy Savings card), call or email Erin Murphy at 217-854-3137 and erinm@mjmec.coop

McCann, Nathaniel Brown and David Winfree.

More than 250 students from the rural areas of Illinois traveled to Springfield on Wednesday, March 28, for the Illinois Electric and Telephone Cooperatives Youth Day.

With rural areas losing population, fewer legislators will be elected to serve downstate, so the need for citizens to take active roles in voting for legislators who have their interests at heart is increasingly important.

“Elected officials enjoy the opportunity to meet with students and learn first-hand their concerns. Many issues debated in the General Assembly personally affect their lives,” said Duane Noland, President and CEO of the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives.

Sen. Wm. Sam McCann met with students representing M.J.M. Electric Cooperative, Inc. The students had an opportunity to view state government in action and question their legislators on key issues. In addition, they heard from both Lt. Governor Sheila Simon and Secretary of State Jesse White. The students also toured the Illinois Supreme Court, the Old State Capitol and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.

“I really enjoyed seeing all the different sites in one day. It’s really great seeing them firsthand,” said Hannah Garrels of Walshville.

“My favorite part was the Capitol – meeting the Lieutenant Governor and the Secretary of State,” said Jonathan Bettis of Carlinville. “People like that seem larger than you at first, but once you see them in person, you can see they’re real people.”

The students also got a chance to discover how cooperatives such as MJM are different from typical utilities.

“I learned that it’s non-profit, and that it helps rural communities out,” said Lucas Reincke of Hillsboro. “As someone from a rural community, I really respect that.”

At the end of the day, the students were interviewed by the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives for a chance to attend Youth Tour – a weeklong, all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.  The two students selected to represent MJM Electric Cooperative at Youth Tour were Allison Groves of Atwater and Hannah Garrels of Walshville. Alternates are Kristin Ishmael of Litchfield and Morgan Clapham of Staunton.

The day was sponsored by the AIEC and is designed to introduce young rural leaders to state government. There were 25 co-ops from across the state represented at the event.

Why we need YOU at the Annual Meeting

March 8, 2012

Did you know that you are not an MJM customer?

Many people don’t realize that as an electric cooperative, MJM doesn’t have customers — we have member-owners. Unlike investor-owned utilities such as Ameren, MJM is owned by the cooperative members we serve. (That means YOU!)

As a partial owner of MJM, you have a choice in how we run the cooperative. That’s why our annual meeting is so important. Without our member-owners present at the meeting to cast their votes, MJM could not conduct its business. We have been a member-controlled company ever since our creation in 1939, and we aim to stay that way.

So to all our member-owners out there, we offer an invitation to join us on March 17 and stay for a free steak lunch and prizes. It just wouldn’t be the same without you there!

Healthy Savings benefits added to Co-op Connections card

January 30, 2012

Update 5/4/12: MJM has just been informed that dental discounts are not yet available in Illinois. (Click here for more information.) We will post an announcement as soon we hear the dental discounts have become available.

MJM’s Co-op Connections® Program is about to save you even more. The card that offers discounts at local merchants and has saved MJM members more than $36,000 on prescriptions now offers members significant savings on lab and imaging services, chiropractic, dental, vision and hearing care.

Erin Murphy, Communications and Member Services Coordinator, says the new Healthy Savings package is available at no cost to members who print new paper cards from www.healthysavings.coop and show it at participating providers along with their plastic cards. This brand-new benefit is part of a commitment to helping members save money during challenging economic times. "The Health Savings package will help our members stretch their paychecks and underscore that MJM is always looking out for its members."

To locate providers that participate in the Healthy Savings program, call 1-800-800-7616 with your card handy or visit www.healthysavings.coop. Savings examples include 10 to 60 percent off eyeglasses, contact lenses and eye exams; 20 to 40 percent discounts on a range of dental care services; and 30 percent off chiropractic treatments.

“Many insurance plans do not include provisions for dental, hearing and vision care. With the new Healthy Savings package, MJM members get no-cost access to five discounted health benefit areas: vision, dental, hearing, lab imaging and chiropractic care," said Murphy.

Detailed information on available savings and how to take advantage of the entire Healthy Savings package is posted at www.healthysavings.coop. If you need additional assistance, call Erin Murphy at 1-217-854-3137.

Announcing our 2012 efficiency rebates

January 20, 2012

Saving energy (and cutting costs) continues to be a hot topic for homeowners, business operators and utilities. By wisely using – and not wasting – energy, we can all be winners. MJM Electric Cooperative has partnered with Wabash Valley Power Association (WVPA) to bring our members the Power Moves program, which offers many energy efficiency rebates and programs in 2012.

But why would we encourage you to use less of the product we sell? It’s simple. If our members’ need for electricity grows too quickly, our wholesale power supplier, WVPA, may have to build more power plants to keep up with the demand. Building a power plant is very expensive and buying electricity generation is becoming more expensive as well. If we can slow the rate which we need new power resources, it can help us keep your costs as low as possible – and being a member-owned business, that’s good for all of us.

For more information on participation and application forms, see our rebate page. You can also contact MJM’s Energy Advisor, Charlie Peterson, at 217-854-3137 or charliep@mjmec.coop

Understanding your bill after switching to the new AMR meter

January 5, 2012

You may have heard that MJM Electric Cooperative has been making plans to install an Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system. The January 2011 edition of the Along the Lines MJM newsletter included an article titled “The Value of Automated Meter Reading”, which outlined a number of the benefits associated with an AMR system, including improved operating and billing efficiencies that will result in a cost savings for the Cooperative and its members. The payback on an AMR system is normally 8 years or less.

Billing of electricity for MJM Electric Cooperative members has always been behind by about two months. For example, the bills due in February are actually for December’s electricity usage. However, once your meter is changed out, the Cooperative will be able to read your meter at the end of the month and bill you for the energy consumed during that month, with no time gap in between energy usage and billing. Because of this change in billing, there will be a “catch up” month that will include an extra month of usage. (That means if you receive your new meter in January, then your next bill in February would include December’s electricity usage as read by your old meter AND January’s electricity usage as read by your new meter.)

We understand that it could be difficult for most people to pay two months worth of electric bills at one time. Therefore the Cooperative decided that it will allow members 15 months to pay for the “catch up” month. Your “catch up” amount will automatically be figured into your next bill, following the meter change out. If you would rather pay off the “catch up” month up front, as opposed to making monthly payments, you may do so by contacting the office to make such an arrangement.  However, please wait to call until after you have received the first bill following the meter change out.

Simply put, you will be billed for two months of usage and two facility charges at one time but will be credited back half of the charged amount to offset the bill. The credit will be stated as an “AMR Contract Credit” on your bill. Another item that you will see under Current Bill Information is the “AMR Meter Exchange Installment Amount.”  This figure is actually the “catch up” amount that you will see for a total of 15 billing periods which is the equivalent to about 2 days of usage.

Once your electric meter is changed out, it will not be necessary to read the meter anymore. Installing an Automated Meter Reading system is one more way the Cooperative is illustrating its commitment to provide you with better service and improved reliability by utilizing a cost effective technology. If you have any questions concerning the AMR system, you may call the Cooperative at 217-854-3137 / 1-800-648-4729 or send an e-mail to amr@mjmec.coop.

Sincerely,

Chris M. Spears, President/CEO

The Value of Automated Meter Reading

May 10, 2011

At the 2010 MJM Electric Cooperative Annual Meeting, it was announced that the Cooperative would be installing an Automated Meter Reading (AMR)/Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. As a member-owned, at-cost electric provider, it makes sense to use technology to improve reliability and eliminate costly billing issues, while at the same time making it possible to better use existing power plants and transmission systems. It makes even more sense when the Cooperative and its members can realize a payback on the investment.

AMR systems offer one way communication and have been around since 1978. Initially such systems basically read the meter, which improved billing accuracy. AMR systems have continued to evolve over time and are now referred to as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). AMI offers two way communication between the cooperative headquarters and meters, as well as monitoring and control devices on the distribution system. The communication available with an AMI system allows the Cooperative the ability to monitor the entire system with near real time data, which enables close oversight of system operations. Improved operating efficiencies and billing efficiencies are other benefits of an AMR/AMI system, which translate into a cost savings to the member. An AMR /AMI system will read the meter, but there is so much more to consider.

Benefits of AMR/AMI include the following:

OUTAGE DETECTION AND RESTORATION: An AMR/AMI system will make it possible for the Cooperative to know right away when an outage occurs and how many members are affected as well as the area affected. Such information will be helpful in determining exactly where the problem is and what needs to be done, which will result in quicker restoration times. It is likely, for example, if an outage takes place at a member’s home during the day, when they are gone, the Cooperative will find out about it and be able to restore the power before the member even returns. Furthermore, the power can be restored during normal working hours, which will avoid the expense associated with overtime.

VOLTAGE MONITORING: If there is a fluctuation in voltage, the Cooperative will be notified by the AMR/AMI system. For a number of different reasons, a member can experience a change in voltage. It could be related to trees, a storm or an equipment malfunction. Thankfully this does not happen frequently. However, when it does, it can lead to an outage and/or some type of damage or equipment failure, which can be costly. Furthermore, an AMR/AMI system will make it possible for the Cooperative to closely monitor the entire distribution system for voltage as well as the kilowatt demand being placed on the system. This will help prevent some outages and damage, while allowing the Cooperative to greatly improve upon its ability to watch over the entire distribution system.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT: In the past, MJM controlled a number of water heaters and some air conditioning load in the summer during periods of peak demand. More recently, this practice has been limited. Nonetheless, it is anticipated that within 3 to 5 years, MJM will be offering more load control/energy management programs than ever before. Controlling load and using new technology to manage energy usage more efficiently will help to put off the need to add more electric generation, which has gone up significantly in price compared to the base load generation built 30+ years ago. An AMR/AMI system will allow the Cooperative to offer a much more comprehensive energy management program that will make it possible for members of the Cooperative to voluntarily participate in a program whereby specific appliances and equipment can be controlled. For example, it is entirely possible that the defrost option on a refrigerator would not be allowed to come on at the same time the water heater is calling for the elements to operate. Once the water heater has finished heating water, then the defrost option could operate. Heating and cooling equipment could also be controlled in an effort to limit peak usage at times when electricity is more expensive. Members that participate in an energy management program will benefit directly through some form of direct economic incentive while all members will benefit indirectly as the demand for more power will be reduced.

TIME OF USE (TOU) PRICING: Within the next 5 years, it is anticipated that a voluntary “Time of Use” rate will be available to members of the Cooperative. Under a TOU rate, members will have an opportunity to shift some of th eir electric consumption to times of the day when electricity is less expensive. For example, it may be less expensive to operate a washing machine, clothes dryer or a dishwasher after 7:00 p.m. instead of earlier in the day. For members that are able to make such an adjustment, they can save money on their electric bill.

PRE-PAID ELECTRIC SERVICE: The two way communication available with an AMR/AMI system will allow the Cooperative to offer a Pre-paid electric service whereby a member can purchase, in advance, a certain number of kilowatt hours. When the member is close to using up the number of kilowatt hours purchased, the Cooperative can notify them in advance that they need to recharge the meter. A pre-paid service would further reduce the need to require a deposit, which may be very attractive to members for different reasons. Additionally, studies show that consumers tend to use less electricity when they are under a prepaid service, which would help put off the need to add more electric generation while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. While prepaid services are new to the electric industry, they are not new to other industries. People who buy LP gas have to pay for it when the tank is filled up. Gasoline stations require consumers to pay up front when they fill up a gas tank in their vehicle. Cell phone companies also offer prepaid services.

REMOTE DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT: An AMR/AMI system will allow the Cooperative to disconnect and reconnect electric services from the office. There will no longer be a need to send a truck and a lineman to physically disconnect or reconnect an electric service. This will save on fuel, vehicle, and labor expenses.

ELECTRICITY THEFT DETECTION: The majority of MJM members are extremely honest and would never intentionally steal power. However, there is a growing number of consumers who steal power. When someone steals electricity, all of the other members of the Cooperative are affected since the power was used, an expense was incurred, and bills must be paid. Sometimes the cost can be recovered and sometimes it cannot. With an AMR/AMI system, the Cooperative will know immediately if anyone tampers with a meter.

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE HONOR SYSTEM ARE ELIMINATED: A self-read system makes it very easy for members to report incorrect meter readings intentionally. Thankfully most MJM Electric Cooperative members report correct meter readings. However, a growing number of members are intentionally reporting incorrect amounts of kilowatt hours used. Early in 2009, MJM read the 9,200 meters on its system and found that approximately 750,000 kWh’s had not been reported, resulting in more than $80,000 in revenue that had not been paid. Most people today would not trust an honor system if they owned and operated a self-serve gasoline station. Unfortunately it is becoming more difficult to accept an honor system when it comes to the consumption of electricity and that is why the majority of electric providers use meter readers or some type of AMR/AMI system. An AMR/AMI system will make it much more difficult to cheat on an electric bill.

BILLING ACCURACY: A frequent problem associated with a self-read meter is that meter readings provided are not accurate. Sometimes a member may also read the meter later than normal and end up with a larger bill. Then the member may request an adjustment. Sometimes, people just don’t read the meter. Meters also fail and if they do, and no one notices for a month or more, an estimate has to be made. In any one of these situations, billing accuracy is affected and so is the amount of revenue that should be collected.

METER READING: Members will not need to read the meter anymore once an AMR/AMI system is operational. For some members, reading the meter has never been a problem. Nonetheless, a growing number of members find meter reading an inconvenience. Additionally, the meter could be considered a cash register and if it isn’t working correctly, revenue is lost. Meters fail and mechanical meters slow down. An AMR/AMI system will not only read the meter, it will also help to ensure that proper meter readings are obtained when needed.

The Cooperative will be installing substation equipment for the AMR/AMI system throughout 2011 and H.D. Supply will be changing out meters for the next 12 to 14 months. Hopefully by March of 2012, the AMR/AMI system will be completely installed and operational. Please note that members should continue to read their own meter until notified by the Cooperative that it is no longer necessary to read the meter.

MJM Electric Cooperative is committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable electric service in an environmentally responsible manner. Installing an AMR/AMI system will be beneficial in assisting the Cooperative to provide better service, improve efficiency and save members money. An AMR/AMI system is an investment that adds value and a number of benefits while paying for itself in eight years or less. If the cost of the system was financed over a 10 year period and none of the cost saving benefits were taken into account, the cost to the member works out to be approximately $2 per month. However, when one takes into account the direct and indirect savings associated with the system, the cost is minimal. When one considers all of the benefits associated with an AMR/AMI system, it is easy to understand why most electric cooperatives across the nation have taken advantage of the technology available and invested in AMR/AMI systems. Installing an AMR/AMI system adds value to the service being provided and is just one more way MJM Electric Cooperative is meeting the needs and desires of its members.
